Abstract

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of abrasives(Si02, CaHPO4 ? 2H20, CaCO3 A1203) on the free fluoride ion contents as well as the total soluble fluoride present in dentifrices containing sodiumfluoride(NaF) and monofluorophosphate(MFP) as time elapse.
In toothpastes containing NaF, NaF is expected to be fully dissociated to F- and the amount of free ionic fluoride is considered equal to the total soluble fluoride. Dentifrice samples were diluted and the insolubles were removed via centrifugation. Total soluble fluoride within the supernatant was determined using Fluoride Ion Selective Electrode. Samples containing sodiummonofluorophosphate(SMFP) were acid hydrolyzed prior to electrode measurements. Fluoride solutions of known fluoride concentrations were used to construct a standard curve.
One group of dentifrice samples were stored at 490C for 3weeks and the measurements were made for each dentifrice - immediately after the dentifrices made, iday, 3days, 1week, 2weeks and 3weeks. The other group of dentifrice samples were stored at 40.60C for 12weeks and the measurements were made for each dentifrice - immediately after the dentifrices made and iday, 3days, lweek, 2weeks, 4weeks, 6week, 8weeks, lOweeks and 12weeks. The following results were obtained.

1. Total soluble fluoridee ion concentration of NaF/Si02 containing toothpastes were maintained. about 1000 PPM.

2. Total soluble fluoride ion concentration of MFP/Si02 containing toothpastes were maintained above 800 ppm
3, Total soluble fluoride ion concentrations of NaF/A12O3 containing toothpastes and MFP/Al2O3 containing toothpastes were maintained about 600 ppm.
4. Total soluble fluoride ion concentrations of WP/CaCO3, NaF/CaCO3i MFP/DCPD containing toothpastes were decreased with time.
5. Total soluble fluoride ion concentration of NaF/CaHPO4 ? 2H2O containing toothpastes were decreased rapidly in a day.
6. The rate of decrease of total soluble fluoride ion concentration of fluoride containing toothpastes were faster in toothpastes storedd at 490C than toothpastes stored at 40.6¢¥0C
